Coaches say guard, plenty of parents type elbow pad, and some brands go with arm protector because the shell covers past the joint. Adult Elbow Guards for Teen Players and Up 

Adult sizing starts at teen and runs up through high school, travel ball and beyond. Velocity climbs fast at this level, and a batters elbow guard stops a 2-1 fastball from ending a season. The shell is light enough that it doesn't slow the swing, which is the usual reason players leave protection in the bag. Pair it with your batting gloves and the whole lead arm is covered. 

Youth Elbow Guards for Ages 7 to 13 

Youth sizing runs ages 7 to 13, covering most players from coach pitch through middle school. This is the level where a youth baseball elbow guard starts to matter, because kids crowd the plate before they learn to get out of the way. Same impact foam shell and elastic strap as the Adult model, scaled to a smaller arm. Most parents buy the first youth elbow protector after their kid wears one off the arm and starts backing out of the box. 

Softball Elbow Guards 

Fastpitch hitters get crowded the same way baseball hitters do, and a softball elbow guard is the same gear with the same sizing. How do I choose the right elbow guard size? 

Youth covers 7 to 13, Adult picks up from teen onward. Adults start at teen and run up from there. If your player sits on the line, check how much of the forearm you want covered, since the Adult shell sits higher on a smaller arm. The elastic strap takes up the difference either way.

Can you wear an elbow guard over a sleeve?

Most hitters do. A compression sleeve goes on first and the guard straps over the top, which stops any rubbing on bare skin during a long game. The mesh backing means you are not stacking two layers that trap heat.

At what age should a player start wearing one? 

Around the time pitchers start throwing hard enough to hurt, which for most leagues is somewhere in the 8 to 10 range. Coach pitch rarely needs one. Kid pitch usually does, especially for anyone who stands close to the plate.

Does an elbow guard slow down your swing? 

Not if it fits. Bulk and weight are what get in the way, so these are built light with the shell shaped to the joint rather than wrapped around the whole arm. Anyone who has worn a cheap one and hated it usually had a fit problem, not a protection problem.

Does it work for softball too?
